What is Meridia?

Meridia is a drug that is designed to help obese people lose weight when used with exercise and a healthy diet. Available is capsule form, Meridia makes users feel full by affecting the part of the brain that controls the appetite. This will then encourage users to eat less and lose weight as a result.

Meridia contains Sibutramine which suppresses the appetite but also increases the heart rate. Sibutramine has been the subject of major controversy because it causes major side effects and in some cases, death.

Possible Side Effects of Meridia

  • Allergic reaction which may lead to respiratory problems hives, swelling of the tongue and lips and throat closing over.
  • An increase in heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • Bleeding, from gums, under the skin, in urine or from the anus.
  • Heart attacks.
  • Psychological damage including suicidal tendencies, psychosis, depression and mania
  • Anorexia
  • Strokes
  • Seizures
  • Excessive sweating
  • In rare cases, users may develop  Serotonin Syndrome which is sometimes life threatening. Symptoms of Serotonin syndrome include:
  • Hallucinations
  • Coma
  • Agitation
  • Nausea, Vomiting and Diarrhoea

Conclusion

When considering the potentially very serious side effects, extreme caution is advised for anyone considering taking Meridian. Due to these side effects, and the belief that the risks of Meridian far outweigh the benefits, Meridian was under FDA review, with the possibility that it could become unapproved.
Some side effects are worse than others, with the potentially fatal Serotonin Syndrome being one of the worst along with the possibility of heart attacks and developing psychological problems such as suicidal tendencies.

Also particularly concerning is the potential development of anorexia in users. It seems ridiculous that obese patients that clearly have issues with overeating and food, should be administered a drug which may cause another eating disorder, Anorexia.
For the average dieter, Meridia should not be considered as a safe option for losing weight. Instead, a change in lifestyle such as healthy eating and regular exercise would be beneficial.

Meridia should only be considered for severely obese people, as this is who the drug is designed for. It must also only be used under a doctor’s close supervision so that any side effects can be dealt with immediately.
